There are 5 key questions in my 5 part series of understanding the meaning of Football I.Q. In part 1, I reviewed the first question: who’s responsibility is it to know the definition of Football I.Q.? The answer was simple and yes, very obvious. It is the athlete’s primary responsibility to know and understand the game. The true value of question 1 is it shows ownership and lays the foundation for question 2: What do I need of know as an athlete?
What do I need to know is the key question all athletes must ask when playing the game. What an athlete needs to know… are the rules of the game. The answer is very powerful because knowing rules, processing rules and taking action in the field allows the athlete to play smart, play fast and thus, achieve the ultimate edge versus competition. Let’s take a closer look at the definition on what an athlete needs to know.
The “K” stands for knowledge of the game. The “N” stands for natural skills, talents and abilities to use in the game. “The “O”stands for opportunities the game offers on and off the field. Lastly, the W stands for the “WOW Factor”. This is the intrinsic quality that every athlete is given at birth. This intrinsic quality is the athletes’ creativity, uniqueness and ability to adapt. Bottom line, we are all born with this WOW Factor and when combined with I.Q. the athlete becomes a true champion. Now you see the value on “What you need to know as an Athlete” go out, make it happen and remember, “Don’t Just Play The Game, Know the Game.”
