Would you LIKE to know how to build a Champion athlete?
Written By: Reggie Ward
This question is in the minds of many coaches, but the real focus of this question lies at the doorsteps of every home that has a child who desires to become the next Kobe, LeBron, Serena, Tiger or Messi. Now, I do not have a crystal ball to supply the answer to this question, but I do believe that there are some key points that we can offer to assist the quest of becoming a champion athlete. So let’s take a sharper look at the word CHAMPION to uncover the power of building the next iconic superstar.
The parent needs to create an environment that is filled with encouragement, accountability and a tireless work ethic, built on discipline, love and a spirit of excellence. In order to support this champion atmosphere, the parent must have the athlete embrace the qualities of life or what I like to call them, the 8 pillars of a champion!!
Character is the key to life: lack of character can destroy your dreams, but when child has the ability to believe, their character will soar to extraordinary heights. Hunger with a healthy lifestyle… being prepared, physically fit & relentless on having the will to go the extra mile by eating, sleeping and making good choices on & off the field. Attitude of excellence..never be content and understand perfection is a myth, but outstanding performance is achievable. Mental Toughness, managing emotions, having listening skills and keeping thoughts on the big goal— becoming a champion athlete. Performance is instrumental – one must be consistent and willing to grow and get better.
Building intelligence – showing them how to study, read, write & meditate on goals and know their WHY. Openness, optimism and honesty must be in the foundation on building trusting relationships with coaches, teammates and most importantly themselves. ”TRUST THE PROCESS”. As a result, now the athlete understands they must recognize and be prepared to take action in any and all opportunities: mind, body and spirit to unleash their power to be a great athlete. So parents embrace the 8 pillars of building champion athletes and enjoy the ride because it’s all worth it!
